Sustainable Development
Fostering ecologically-friendly agricultural practices, we produce organically in association with endemic forest species. Our single-origin coffee is produced with fair trade practices. In addition to being recognized by our direct buyers, these processes are put through the rigorous and prestigious German certification process known as BCS.
In our organic production systems, the shade of overstory trees plays a vitally important role, modifying the microclimate and regulating growth. The roots from the associated trees recycle nutrients, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. The shade trees modify the micro-environment by refreshing the air and increasing humidity. The trees produce organic residuals that augment the soil’s fertility and the improve the quality of the fruits, which grow bigger and healthier.
To shade and protect the agroecosystem, we use native forest species such as guava, banana, avocado, and many others. These trees also provide fruit crops, which diversifies the income of our farmers. The benefits of this diversity of plant life on a coffee farm are great; families are able to produce their own firewood, animal forage, food, organic material, medicine, living fences, and much more. Our families’ farms are usually further diversified by raising livestock or fish.
